Declare before all
But what does God say? He says not only that truth or sound doctrine is the foundation of the church; He also says that the church is the foundation and support of the truth! We simply cannot be afraid to “put out there” what we believe. We cannot be afraid to declare before all
That God is real, and he is the Creator and Lord of all things.
That the Bible is God’s inspired and inerrant Word.
That the human race was created good, but all human beings are now sinners and in need of salvation.
That God loves all sinners.
That salvation comes ONLY through Jesus Christ, who is the one and only divine Son of God.
That Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and was bodily raised from the dead.
That sinners are saved by grace, through faith, in baptism, for good works.
That baptism is the moment of time when God bestows His grace upon sinners.
That those who are saved become a part of Christ’s church and must live as part of His church.
That Satan and his demons are real and are our enemies, but have been defeated by Christ.
That God has shown us in His Word what is right and what is wrong.
That marriage is a permanent union between one man and one woman.
That abortion is wrong, and homosexual acts are wrong.
That women are not allowed to teach men or have authority over men.
That Jesus will visibly come to the earth a second time.
That at the second coming all will be raised from the dead and face the Final Judgment.
That heaven as the “new heavens and new earth” is real, and hell as eternal punishment is real.
Holding up the truth is dangerous. It will make enemies, draw hostility, turn some people off, and drive some people away. There are forces in the world that are actively seeking to destroy the church and suppress its voice just because it holds up these truths before the world. Notable among these hostile forces are liberal Christendom, Islam, and the homosexual community.
But holding up the truth before the world is what God has called the church to do. If we do it faithfully, we must believe that the truth will draw many into the household of God. R. C. H. Lenski says, “By means of the church, which the living God made his truth’s pillar and foundation, this truth shines in the world and draws men unto itself, to be joined to those who are its pillar and foundation” (The Interpretation of St. Paul’s Epistles to the Colossians, to the Thessalonians, to Timothy, to Titus and to Philemonon [Augsburg 1961], p. 607).
